EIIA Risk Management Services
A sound risk management program reduces the cost of insurance through effective risk control practices. EIIA has assembled a dedicated risk management team that is dedicated to developing higher education risk management practices. The EIIA Risk Management Team works closely with and supports each institution's efforts in developing a risk management program specifically geared to that institution's needs to avoid hazardous conditions and reduce areas of potential loss. The EIIA Risk Management Team also assists member institutions in their efforts to administer and manage claims.
RISK MANAGEMENT ADVICE & EDUCATION
•
The EIIA Risk Management Team continuously reviews potential exposures to loss arising from on and off campus activities. In addition, the Team provides risk management advice including situation analysis and contract reviews from a risk management perspective to help institutions avoid assuming unnecessary risk. A library of risk management material is available on the EIIA website, www.eiia.org .
•
The Risk Management Team hosts regional seminars and webinars on various risk management topics at no cost to members. Past topics have included: “Hiring and Firing in Higher Education” and “Workers Compensation Claims Administration.”
•
Scheduled “Risk Management Consultation” visits raise the awareness of risk management issues across campus. An EIIA Director of Risk Management visits the campus for an in-depth consultation and meets with faculty and staff designated by the Business Officer.
•
The innovative “IT/Security Analysis” visit by the Director of Risk Management/IT provides an in-depth review of the institution's information technology exposure to potential loss.
•
Through EIIA's license agreement, members have access to the Sonic e-Learning Inc. AlertDriving.com Traffic Safety Large Passenger Van Program. This web-based driver training system allows an institution to introduce safe driving practices to all drivers of institution vehicles. Online tracking allows an institution's administrator to track the progress of program participants. EIIA promotes frequent loss prevention training on campus. On behalf of its members, EIIA subscribes to the BLR 7-Minute Safety Training system.
RISK MANAGEMENT ANALYSIS
•
The Institutional Percentile Ranking reports allow each institution to assess its loss experience relative to other institutions. Benchmarking self-assessments have been designed to help an institution identify areas of potential improvement in its risk management practices. The results also provide a comparison with other institutions in areas such as safety committees, fall prevention, property conservation, etc.
HIGHER EDUCATION SPECIFIC RISK CONTROL PROGRAMS
•
The EIIA Property Conservation Manual includes a sample disaster recovery plan and checklists and guidelines for fire protection and life safety equipment.
•
The EIIA Casualty Loss Prevention Manual provides members with higher education specific programs designed to help reduce workers compensation and liability losses. The topics included in the Manual are organized in three sections to help guide an institution through the program development process: Risk Management Administration, Strategic Risk Control Programs, and Advanced Risk Control Programs including OSHA Guidelines.
•
Each year EIIA contracts with Attorney Steve Hirschfeld of Curiale Dellaverson Hirschfeld & Kraemer, LLP, San Francisco , California to provide EIIA member institutions access to employment practices consultations and policy reviews. The cost of these hours is included in the member institution's educators' legal liability insurance premium.
•
In response to member Business Officers' request, EIIA developed the Campus Conduct Hotline. This service is a medium for anonymous phone reporting of unethical practices on campus and is available for faculty, staff and students. Member institutions use this service at no additional cost.
CAMPUS RISK AWARENESS TOOLS
•
Best Practices Planners discuss risk management options for risks specifically associated with higher education such as ropes courses and climbing walls, security guard services, swimming pools, alumni activities, etc. The Planners identify practices that result in minimal risk versus major risk to the institution.
•
The Risk Management Team has developed Claims Case Studies that examine an actual claim from a member institution and asks questions on how such a claim could have been avoided or mitigated.
SERVICE PROVIDER MANAGEMENT
•
The Risk Management Team performs ongoing reviews of all open claims valued greater than $10,000 by using on-line access to the claims adjusters' notes.
•
EIIA negotiates specific claims handling procedures with its insurers. The Risk Management Team monitors these guidelines for compliance.
THE EIIA RISK MANAGEMENT TEAM IS COMMITTED TO ASSISTING MEMBER INSTITUTIONS IN THEIR EFFORTS TO REDUCE AREAS OF POTENTIAL LOSS AND DEVELOPING RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS SUITED TO EACH SPECIFIC INSTITUTION. THIS JOINT EFFORT BETWEEN EACH INSTITUTION AND THE EIIA RISK MANAGEMENT TEAM STRENGTHENS EIIA’S ABILITY TO WORK ON BEHALF OF MEMBER INSTITUTIONS AND SAFEGUARDS THE LONG-TERM VIABILITY OF THE INSURANCE PROGRAM FOR THE MUTUAL BENEFIT OF ALL CONSORTIUM MEMBERS.
